Headway Gloucestershire was established in 1987 and since then has been working to improve the lives of adult survivors of brain injury. We provide long term recovery support through our enablement centre and outreach service.
A brain injury can impact on every aspect of a survivor’s life; it can cause physical disability, sensory changes, cognitive difficulties, behavioural and personality changes. Some of the people we work with are learning to adapt to changes in their dexterity, mobility and movement; some are coping with memory loss, communication difficulties and changes to how they think, feel and express themselves. Almost all of them experience a loss of confidence and an increase in fatigue and social isolation. Often there are also immediate and far reaching effects on lifestyle, income, employment, housing and personal relationships. Brain injuries are unique, and effect individuals in different ways which means that recovery support must be responsive, tailored to the individual and designed to maximise autonomy, independence and ultimately quality of life.
Research tells us that medical advances mean more patients are surviving a severe brain injury. Conversely support to manage physical disability, sensory impairment and changes to cognition and behaviour has reduced greatly as statutory services are under constant pressure to make budget savings. The support we can provide is critical to the people that we work with.
Please support us by joining the lottery. Your involvement can have a direct impact on how survivors live their lives after injury. You will also have the opportunity to win some great prizes. Good Luck!
