The Hollie Gazzard Trust (HGT) was created following the murder of 20-year-old Hollie Gazzard by an ex-partner in February 2014. Hollie had been abused, coercively controlled and stalked by her killer. Despite the abuse she was suffering at the time of her death, Hollie was a determined and successful young woman and a true inspiration for others. Her family began the charity to help other young people learn the dangers about domestic violence and abuse (DVA), coercive control and stalking.
The funds raised through HGT help young people to find a better future and reach their potential. This is achieved through programmes including CRUSH and Rae run by Gloucester Domestic Abuse Support Service (GDASS) and supported financially by the Trust. Young people attend a CRUSH course to address different elements of an abusive relationship and discuss the way in which a healthy relationship should work instead. Rae includes one-off workshops with schools building healthy relationships and identifying abuse by encouraging early identification of abusive tactics as well as supporting young people to enter into healthy relationships and to support each other. The Trust funds a full-time co-ordinator to continue and develop this crucial work and from April 2017, HGT will appoint an Independent Stalking Advocacy Caseworker (ISAC) to help victims who are referred to its new Gloucestershire Stalking Support Service – which will highlight the dangers surrounding stalking. Many young people are unaware that behaviours from others that they experience are actually illegal and unacceptable.
The Trust also works alongside businesses in Gloucestershire to advise them of their legal and moral responsibilities to those in the county’s workforce who may be experiencing DVA, coercive control and stalking. In addition, it supports local charity Increase the Peace with funding in order to steer youngsters away from knife crime, guns and gang culture.
